— (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept, 18. Mr E. D. McLennan, M.P., for Franklin, announced to a meeting of the Reform Party supporters at Waiuku to-day, “ that, acting under medical advice, he had decided not to contest u.e seat at the general election.”

A party conference is to be held a Pukekohe two weeks’ hence to liomi mate an official Reform candidate. MORRTNSVILLE, September 17.

Mr F. Lye, the Liberal candidate for the Waikato seat, opened his campaign in Morrinsvillo. He said he was not pledged to any banner, although he had the support of the United Party.

Mr I.yo severely criticised the Reform administration. The Reform manifesto issued before last election was a good one, but boles bad been shot through it from start to finish. A wave of publicity had returned Mr Coates at the last election, and to-day he was No. ill in the “ world’s great men ” series of cards issued with a certain brand of cigarettes, and he had so far forgotten Ins dignity as to join the “ Mustard Club.”

The Hon. A. D. McLeod, said Mr Lye, was a political bully, and the loud-speaker of the Reform party. In land settlement he had “sat down on Hie job ” and he had failed to initiate a decent land policy.

The speaker received an excellent leaving and after answering questions vas accorded a vote of thanks.
