HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER, 14th.
The Committee met at 7.30 p.m. Present: —Alessrs G. A. Perry (Mayor) .Messrs T. W. Duff, E. W. Heonun, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, J. King, D. J. Evans and Dr Tichelmaiin. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Klcock and Jeffries. The minutes were confirmed and correspondence outward approved.
J N WARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Precision Engineering Coy Ltd. re traffic signs.—Received. From Afedieal Officer of Health, Christchurch, re appointments of Departmental Inspectors us Sanitary Inspectors to local authorities.—-Received. Air Bettcll appointed. From N.'Z. Underwriting and Development Corporation Ltd., Wellington, pointing out the special facilities the organisation possesses in the direction of financing Public Body Loans and Debentures.—Received.
From District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, forwarding copy of revised statement outlining the terms and conditions on which the Government is prepared to subsidise works which the Council may decide to undertake this year for the relief of unemployed. From District Telegraph Engineer, Christchurch, soliciting the assistance of local bodies ill the matter of ensuring that drain-layers and others, obtaining, permits for exacuvation work, have specially brought under their notice the necessity for examining this Department’s cabling and duct plans before commencing any work, which might interfere with the underground tv I epliono system.—Received. From Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, notifying infectious diseases for the month of August 1923.—Received. FromTrlokitika Swimming Club, intimating that a delegation, consisting of Messrs A. H. Lawn and M. Houston had been appointed to wait on the Council at its meeting on the 14th. inst.—Received.
From Secretary, Westland Racing C'luh, application for extension of water service to back of race course for fire purposes.—Received; overseer to report.
From Hon Secretary Beautifying Association forwarding balance of £lO subsidy on gravelling of Cass- Square. —Received.
From J. J. Alelntosh desiring attention to - state of kerbing on Gibson Quay and asking for attention.—Received; referred to Public AVorks Committee to report. DEPUTATION.
A deputation consiting of Alessrs A. H. Lawn and Al. H. Houston, waited on the Council in connection with improvements to the swimming baths. It was proposed to cement the whole of the bath, and they asked for the assistance of the Council in having the work carried out. An offer had been received for cementing in grey cement at £lls and in white cement at £lls. AL- Evans tributed the excellent work of the Baths Committee, and moved that tlie Public Works Committee obtain a report hy the -Borough Overseer, and if their report-was favourable, that the Council bo prepared to grant a subsidy up to £so.—Seconded hy Air Duff and carried.
The deputation thanked the Council for their hearing and withdrew. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £2lO 17s Id, payments £4OO Is 4d, credit balance £205 11s 2d.—Received. Accounts amounting to- £2OB Os lOd were passed for payment. FOREAIAN’S REPORT. The footpath in Park Street lie tween Brittan and Bealcy Streets was cleaned and gravelled a distance of about eight chains. The footpath on Gibson Quay from the corner of Sewell St. to the railway crossing was cleaned and gravelled. The footpath alongside Cass Square on AVehl Street side was finished, and that on the east side in Brittan Street was gravelled, but requires raking in yet. The footpath on the east side of Brittan Street leading to the Bowling Club was cleared of blackberries. The footpath from the Central Dairy Factory to Sale Street was levelled and gravelled. The water table, and footpath at the corner of Fitzherbert Street in Hampden was cleaned. DRAINS. Tlie drain on the east side of Cass Square was cleaned out between AVeld and Stafford Sts. Jollie St. drain on the north side of Hampden St. was cleaned out, and the growth cut. Sewell St. drain between AVeld and Stafi'oiil Sts. collapsed in two places, which was repaired. CURBINGS AND CROSSINGS. Two chains of curbing were put in in Hamilton St. between _ Sewell and Tailored -Sts., and crossings -at J. Alclntosh’s and J. Simpson’s, also at J. Gifford’s in Hall St. ' AVATER. .
The water connections at Pilkington’s in Sewell St. and Mr Wieblitz’s on Gibsell’s Quay was repaired, and a connection was put in to the Anglican Hall in Fitzlierhort St. A new pipe lino was put in the main at the corner of Brittan and Stafford Sts. During the month the water from the Lake was turned off for three days to see what effect it would have on the supply coming into the reservoir. The first day the water dropped ten inches, and then remained stationary. so it appears the Forks would keep up the supply while repairs were carried out between the Forks and the Lake. The average depth of water in the Reservoir for the month was eleven feet. —Received. The Mayor moved that the Council employ Mr J. C. Macfarlane to carry out a survey of a portion of the water race near the Lake:—Seconded by Mr Hoenan and,carried. The Manager of the Abattoirs (Mr •T. Jarman) reported during August there were examined:—l3 cows, 13 heifers, 72 bullocks, 108 sheep, 1 lamb, 17 pigs, 17 calves. Condemned: 3 cows, 1 sheep. Fees for the month: £57 14s 6d (same month last year £6l 17s 6d).—Received. The Council rose at 8.15 p.m.
