(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) RADIO FROM STEAMER. AUCKLAND, September 14. A radio from the steamer Sussex states that in company with tlio Kaitoke it will arrive hero on Saturday afternoon. A FIRE. WAIPUKURAU, Sept. 14. A seven-roomed dwelling at Porangaliau owned by Tnpo To Kuril was destroyed early this morning. The only occupant, George To Kuril, escaped in iiis night attire. Nothing was saved. Insured ill Hartford office for £7OO and furniture £2OO. The fire originated in the kitchen but the causo is unknown. A BURGLARY. CARTERTON, Sept. 14. Last night the premises of Gordon Hughnn Ltd., garage proprietors, were broken into. Entrance was mado by boring through the back door into tlio garage. . Then the door into the office, heavily padlocked, was forced by means of a steel lever. The till was opened and a sum of £3 3a id taken. The intruder was evidently disturbed, seven shillings also ill the till, being overlooked. The police have the matter in hand.
FINED £lO. ' ASHBURTON, Sept. 14. Before Justices of the Peace, William Robert Furniss, a garage proprietor, was charged with lieing intoxicated while in charge of a ear. He was fined £lO and his license suspended till tho end of the registration year.
AN UNUSUAL ATTITUDE ASHBURTON,. Sept. 14. Arthur diaries Fowler Gibb, aged 31, a recent, arrival' from England, where he was an architect, surprised Court officials to-day by demanding trial- by jury on a charge of lieing a rogue anil vagabond. To avoid the expense, tho jiolice withdrew this charge, but on a second count of being idle anil disorderly, in that he had no lawful means of support, the accused was sentenced to three months’ gaol. He had three times previously been convicted The police stated accused begged food in Lowcliffe district, where he slept on sacks in a chaff store.
SUPREME COURT. WELLINGTON, Sept. 14. The following prisoners were sentenced by Justice Smith at the Supreme Court to-day:— William Patrick Leary, for assault and causing actual bodily harm to three years Borstal. Patrick Ernest Furlong Collin, indecent assault on a male anil ail indecent act with intent to insult or offend, nine months. Thomas Christian Jensen, breach of probationary license to reformative not exceeding two years.
.FOUND DEAD. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 14. Edward Pattnell, 45, married, was found dead in boil at 123 Madras Street to-day and a bottle pf poison nearby.
THREE MONTHS HARD. GISBORNE, Sept. 14. George Edward Bell Jnger, 25, nil Australian with many aliases and a long list of previous convictions was •sentenced at the Police Court to three months imprisonment for forgery and false pretences at Mnuiigaturoto and Whangarei.
POUT NAPIER’S CARGO. AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. No work was done this morning in the discharge of tile Port Napier’s cargo, as a result of the watersiders demands' for increased pay. Their first demand was for pay at 7s Gil per hour for handling cargo partly damaged by fire. A suggested compromise that ail extra tenpence per hour for work on the shelter deck and tenpence per hour for work in tween denies was not acceded. Yesterday afternoon after a stop, work proceeded in the hold where tho fire oeourred while the conference was proceeding but an impasse was reached. Part of the oar-go from No. 4 hold has been unloaded, some of it hopelessly damaged hv fire and water. Much of the cargo was intended for the Auckland Christmas trade., Outwardly tlie case cargo in sight appeals damaged mostly by smoke. It is known however that a great' deal of damage was caused' by a large amount of water pumped into the hull.
motor driver, fined. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 14. Alexander Hamilton, a Springston ■farmer, was to-day charged with driving a motor dangerously in Cambridge ’Pernice. The police said Hamilton met a young woman and they had some drinks together. At 0 p.m. they came out of an hotel and got into Hamilton’s car. The woman said that she would like to learn to drive. She got into the driver's seat. Hamilton was seen leaning over her and was controlling the car and helping her to drive. - They stopped somewhere near the A.AI.C.A. and ueio arrested.. Hamilton was not drunk, hut the woman had had too much liquoi. The Magistrate said:—“There’s only one thing to do with this man and that is prohibit him Irom driving. Ifo is not fit to drive and, moreover, there is a very unsavoury aspect of the case. Defendant is fined £2O and costs and his license cancelled. He is prohibited from getting another for two years. If lie comes before the Court again with his record he will go to gaol.”

George Frederick Shaw, 21, formerly cook on the Port Auckland, who either deserted or missed the vessel at New Plymouth last Afav. was before the Court to-day charged with theft, of £8 8s Od from a room mate, clothing valued at £2 from the room of a lady hoarder, and incurring a debt of £1 5s f()1 . hoard and lodgings by fraud, having represented lie was employed at Parliament House in a confidential <n pa city, and showed the landlady crested paper.
