BUSINESS BISK IN UNEMPLOYMENT. “It is impossible to exaggerate the business risk in widespread unemployment. Discharge of a single worker is not the simple matter it appears to be To the mail discharged it may mean to he deprived of his means of subsistence. That is serious enough, but wo forget what it costs the rest of us. Not a mail can lose his job but we all lose something. The man discharged ceases to produce and also lie ceases to consume. He adds nothing to the wealth of us all. lie takes from tlie business of all when lie ceases to bo a buyer. The loss of a single producer and buyer might never be noticed. Multiply by several millions, and the effect will bo felt by tlie whole of business.”—Hon. J. J. Davis, United States Secretary of Labour.
A Magistrate in tlvo South Island, [ Mr K. J. Mosley, made an interesting | statement on the discretionary powers of judges and magistrates in the suppression of names. Mr Mosley differs from Mr Justice Adams, wlio prefers to leave the question of suppression to the Press, holding that the newspapers aro quite competent to discriminate. . . It would he interesting to learn how many of Mr Mosley’s colleagues are in agreement with him on this point. There is unanimity among newspaper men on the subject, at all events, and a definite stand against delegating such responsibilities would be welcomed.—Auckland “Sun.”
