ANNUAL REPORT WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. Tlie fact that expenditure exceeded revenue by £12,000 is revealed irt the annual report of the Marine Department. However, receipts have increased from £73,696 in 1921-22 to £133,755 in 1927-28, while payments have decreased from £151,696 to £119,07S so that the Department has improved its cash position to the extent of £92,696 in seven years. The position now is that the Marine Department requires at least an additional £12,000 annually to place it on a self supporting basis. This loss is made up mainly by survey of ships '£5500, inspection of machinery £5500 and fisheries £IOOO. J MARINE CASUALTIES. During the year no loss of life resulted from marine casualty to any trading vessel, but two pleasure launches were posted as missing, involving the loss of three men. Since 1924 only two lives have been lost at sea from trading vessels.
