WESTLAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

EXECUTIVE MEETING. The general committee of the Society meet at tlie County Chambers yesterday afternoon at 4.30 o’clock. Present:—Air 1). J. Evans (President), Revd. G. Knowles-Smith, and Revd. Nelson AVright (Vice-Presidents), Alessrs Richards, Stapleton, Sweney, • Conning, (lion, treasurer) and J. AV. Morris (boil secretary). Apologies were made for unavoidable absence of Revd, J. AV. Hayward and Messrs Coles and Lynn. The formal business being transacted, inward correspondence was read. From Revd. Nelson AVright, accepting office as Vice-President and donat- • ing £1 Is.—Received with thanks and All- AVright welcomed as a member the Executive. From lies Baker donating £l, Tlios Moore £1 10s (refund of prize money) and H. AL Coulson, donating £2 2s annually in appreciation of the edu- / cational value of the work done by the —. Society.—Received with appreciative thanks. The Secretary reported that in all £l6 13s 6d had been received in donations, the gifts being acknowledged with thanks. GENERAL. The Secretary reported tlie receipts in connection with the late Competitions had been £223, and the expenses £133, leaving a credit balance of £OO. To this was to lie added £54 credit balance carried forward, and giving the Society a surplus of about £145. Received. The Chairman stated this was eminently satisfactory, and their thanks were due to Alessrs Conning (Treasurer) and Morris (Secretary'), for being able to produce so excellent a balance sheet. The Society was likewise indebted to all who had co-op-erated in making the Competitions an all round success. He moved a vote of thanks accordingly, which was seconded by Revd. Nelson -AVright and carried unanimously.

The Secretary mentioned various matters in regard to the Competitions, and these were discussed. It was thought that entries for the instrumental section should he more encouraged, and a hope was expressed Club teams would he forthcoming, and a start-made with public speaking. Reference was made also to the dancing section which it was thought should be remodelled. The matter of outside judges being referred to, tlie Secretarywas desired to make enquiries in that respect, and to note any necessary changes in the syllabus. !;; ■ It was, decided to tender the com-

petitors a social evening on the 20th inst. at the Soldiers’ Hail, when the trophies in connection with the Com- , petitions will be presented. Specially appreciating . the work of Aliss Daly (official accompanist) and Air Alorris (Hon Secretary) the meeting voted an honorarium, 'and recorded a special vote of thanks to all who had helped to contribute to the success of the Competitions. It was stated several ladies and gentlemen had- given in their names as annual subscribers of £1 each towards the funds of the Society, and the President, Secretary and Treasurer were asked to report - in respect to corices- vsioiis to such donors at the next meeting.- : : It' was resolved- to hold the annual meeting c ! f the Society- at a date to he fixed next month. The opinion was expressed that the practice of friends, recognising the efforts of some' of the‘performers ' at demonstration concerts with gifts should not be encouraged.
