—~ A, LONDON’S MENANCB FROM '~ GAS ATTACKS
LONDON, Sept. G. Recalling the .criticisms following on the recent British air manoeuvres, at London that the authorities are apparently making no effort .to provide London with some form of defence against poison gas attacks, "The i Times” aeronautical correspondent says: “On the contrary, the authorities arc alive to this prohlem and are actively searohiug for an antidote for civilian- use.” , t :• The correspondent points out: “OK viousl.v the more successful that antidote the less necessary it is to demonstrate it, the .need rather being to advance with secrecy, in the national necessity even though it may give the impression that nothing is being done.” Japan recently rehearsed a gas at- ’’ taeK, serving out gas masks to the population, but the correspondent says: "If London’s preparation for gas attacks is the storage of ten million gas. masks ready for distribution, then London is not prepared now, and will not ’ . l:c for many years to come. It is also clear that huge underground shelters . J are valueless, especially against the heavy gas of the mustard type, which t- ' creeps along and lies on the ground.. They may he effective against ex- 1 . plosive bomba but against gas, the logi- > ..'. cal refuge appears to be the roofs and. upper storeys, where the gases cannot roach, or where they will become inno-; euous in contact with free air currents.”
The writer adds:—"Only effective;, protection must rest in the use of somo' readily-acquired material,' and not in * the issue of special apparatus from a central store. That is the ideal aimed at but tho extent to which the authorities have been successful is necessary to be kept secret, as • the announcement of this particular defence' \ measure would inevitably lead to fur-. thor experiments to find gas to defeat the anti-dote. , >- •
