YACHT RACING. SHAMROCK AND BRITANNIA LEAD IN ENGLAND. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 3. During the present yacht racing season, which is drawing to a close, Sir Thomas Lipton’s famous craft Shamrock has taken 13 first prizes, 7 second and I third. This has been its most successful year. Tho King’s cutter Britannia comes next.with 9 firsts, 5 seconds and 5 thirds.
Sir Thomas Lipton still aspires to win the America Cup, and is to build another yacht for tho attempt in 1930.
The United States has held the America Cup since the inception of tho race in 1851. A disadvantage to English yachts is that the challenger lias to sail to America to compote, and consequently is not as speedy as tho defender. Sir Thomas Lipton built tho first Shamrock in 1899, and has been trying to win the cup at intervals since then. His last attempt was in 1920.
INDUSTRIAL PEACE. THE MOND CONFERENCE. RUGBY, September 3. There were 020 delegates at the Trades Union Congress. The membership represented is just under 4,000,000 a decrease of 280,000 since last year. Later in the week the question of industrial relations will he considered, with special reference to the General Council’s share in the conference with the group of large employers. According to the “ Daily Herald,” there is a general feeling that the General Council’s action in co-operating with those employers in tho establishment of a scheme for maintaining industrial peace will he approved by a substantial majority, and that “the decision of the congress will mark a definite and historic turning-point in trade union development.”
ANNUAL FESTIVAL. ‘ WEST COUNTRY CHOIRS. RUGBY 7 , September 3. Numerous visitors from European countries and the British Dominions arc attending the 2QBtli festival of the three choirs of Gloucester, Worcester, and Hereford, which is being held this week at Gloucester. Festivals take place annually, in turn, in the cathedrals of these three West Country cities, and their extremely high standards have given them a wide musical appeal. They date from 1715 when the three cathedral choirs began meeting annually for the practice of glee and madrigal singing. Breaks in the continuity of the festivals have been few, and tlioir character has been broadened to include orchestral and secular music. RELIC OF PRINCESS LOWENSTEIN’S PLANE. RUGBY, Sept. 2. An aeroplane wheel, which was washed up on the coast of Iceland, has been identified ns part of the machine in which Princess Lowenstein Wortheim set out from this country on August 31. 1927, in nn attempt to fly the Atlantic.
