CANTERBURY v. WEST COAST’
It is not often that the Hokitika sporting public lmvo the opportunity of witnessing a. representative Rugby game on Cass Square so that the match between Canterbury and West 'Coast representatives to lie played on Saturday afternoon is causing a considerable amount of interest. The visiting team leave Christchurch for the Coast to-morrow morning. The game should prove an attractive one. The West Coast team having played together on a number of occasions, should have improved their combination, which the preponderance of Hokitika players therein should also materially assist. 'Hie pack is a. heavy and fast one, though the absence of Freitas will lie missed especially in the open play. The visiting combination arc reported to bo clever attackers and fast in the loose forward play so that attractive Rugby should prevail. With fine weather till Saturday the ground should he in good order, and there should be a large attendance. In view of the sulxstniitial expense- in connection with the match the charge for admission to the ground will he, gentlemen 2s, ladies Is, children 6d.
BULLER-COAST REPS. TO PLAY THE ALL BLACKS. The selectors, Messrs Jeffery (Buller) and Dowell (West Coast) last- evening selected the under-mentioned players as the team to represent Buller and West Coast combined, to play against the “Now Zealand All Blacks” at Grey mouth on Wednesday, 12th hist., at Victoria Park. The Buller contingent will arrive in Greymouth next Tuesday evening, and will he billeted at the Golden Eagle Hotel. THE TEAM. Full-back: J. King (Hokitika). Three-quarters: Robinson (Buller), Fong (Greymouth), O’Brien (Buller). Five-eighths: Griffiths (Buller), and Houston (Hokitika). Half: McCleary (Hokitika), captain. Wing-fonvard: I-lagar (Hokitika). Hookers: Gardiner (Buller), Tunnicliffc (Buller). Middle row: A. King (Hokitika), Stewart (Buller), Mclntosh (Hokitika). Back row: McCabe (Buller), Dougherty (Hokitika).
, Emergency forwards: Caldwell (Buller), Loekey (Buller). Emergency backs: Trfinui (Hokitika), Jenkins (Greymouth). N’.S.W. PLAYER’S CASE. WELLINGTON, September 1. The New Zealand Rugby Union’s Management Committee mot to-day to consider the case of J. O’Connor, of the New South Wales team, who was ordered off the field in the match with Hawke’s Bay on Saturday. After considering the evidence taken at the inquiry, tho Committee decided that no further action was necessary. WEST COAST RUGBY UNION. The usual weekly meeting of the above Executive was held last evening at Greymouth. Canterbury Union wrote advising that their B representative team would arrive to-morrow evening, proceeding through to Hokitika that evening, and playing West Ccast representatives there on Saturday next. The Secretary advised that the We'stlanci Sub-Union had all arrangements in hand for tho match, and for entertainment of the visitors during their sojourn in Hokitika.
The Innngahun Sub-Union wrote asking for representation in tho junior team to tour Canterbury on loth Sept., and it was resolved to reply that the tour eventuated through a movement started by the combined Grey Clubs, and that the players were finding their own finance for the trip.
The New Zealand Union wrote asking this Union to give AY. Benyon 14 days in which to show cause why he should not ho oxpellcd. Star Club wrote withdrawing their senior team from the present competition.
It was resolved, after considerable discussion, to write the Club strongly protesting re the apathy shown by their Executive and players in not turning out a senior fifteen this last two Saturdays, and not to accept their withdrawal.
Mr Ryan was appointed manager of the Grey members of the A\est Coast team to play Canterbury at Hokitika. It was resolved that the Westland Sub-Union he asked to supply a referee for the Canterbury match.
It was decided to apply to the Railwav Department to delay trains on Wednesday, 12th, on the occasion of the All Black v. West Coast-Buller match.
Mr T. Mclntosh was appointed referee for tlio All Black match, and Mr T. Ryan was appointed manager of the combined team.
The Secretary was empowered to have programmes printed, and it was decided to make charge for admission 2s and Is; school children free. Next Monday night was decided upon for meeting, in lion of I uesday., Mr Rvan was given permission to arrange for a macth, Aralmra v. United, on Wednesday, 12th September It was decided to accept the a cup from Mr Then. Sanity (Kumornl for a West Coast junior sevenaside championship tournament, same to he played on September 29th, undei the auspices of the Kumara Club, at Kumara. . It was resolved that the cup should he won three times in succession or five times at intervals, and that the competition he open to all junior dubs on the West Coast. A motion of thanks was passed to the donor for the handsome trophy.
