Australian Press Assn.—United Service ramsay Macdonald. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) VANCOUVER, September 4. Air J. Ramsay -MacDonald, completing Ins tour of AVestern Canada, announced he is relinquishing his seat for South Wales at the next General Election, having been invited to contest tlie Senhnm Harbour Division, County Durham, in place of tho sitting member. Sidney AVebb, who is retiring to private life.
LABOR SECRETARY’S VIEWS. UNEAIPLOYAIENT IN AAIERICA (Received tins day at 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 3. A message from Springfield, Illinois, states the Secretary of the American Federation of Labour, Frank Morrison, told the Labour Day Demonstration: “We should not boost our country as a land of prosperity and opportunity with unemployment at tlie present stage.” Using the estimates of the United states Labour Department, Morrison placed unemployment at present at three million persons. He said: “This means 15 million persons, or approximately. one eighth of tlie population arc not coptinually assured of food and shelter. Such conditions offer a fertile field for discontent, based on despair.” He stated the unemployment situation 'was intensified by the increased Use of machinery and challenged the attention and efficiency of exports, stating “machines, electricity■ and science are sweeping the workers into tho streets.”
