Bradley, of Alt. ltoskill, was awakened by the screaming of a baby at 2 o’clock this morning, to find the house afire and every avenue of escape apparently cut off. Eventually lie smashed glass door loading on to an enclosed porch in front of the house, dropped a tin trunk to tho ground, and lowered Ills wife, Miss Amy Turner, and his daughter of nine, and his baby out.
After making his own escape, Bradley rushed to the public telephone but not having the necessary coin, had to wait lor a milkman before the brigade was called, by which time tho house was destroyed.
The house was insured by the owner, ,1. Cook, for £709, Bradley’s contents being insured for £250.
BULK STORE BURNT. AUCKLAND, Sept. 3. No explanation can he found for the fire last night- in the throe-storeyed hulk building, owned by Wliittomo and Stevenson in Carlton Gave Road. Tlicro were two outbreaks on different floors. Though cal loti early, the Newmarket Brigade had a difficulty in locating the fires, owing to the dense smoke. The building was insured for £3,500 and the stock for £5,700.
MOTOR BUS ACCIDENT. WELLINGTON, Sept, 3. A motor- bus wont over a deep hank near Parcmata and live persons wero badly injured. Frank Drury (driver) compound fracture ol left leg, and other injuries. A. Mexted, farmer, broken arm. W. Alt-Key, dislocated shoulder and concussion. Airs Hia Pomarc, scalp wound and concussion. Aliss AL Lei toll (nurse at Porirun Hospital), broken ribs. The rest of the occupants wore also nurses and though knocked about, wore not seriously hurt.
DROWNING ACCIDENT. WHAKATAN-E, Sept. 3. Raymond Alexander AfcPhee, aged 21, a teller in the local Bank of Australasia, was drowned in AVaimana river on Saturday evening, when returning by motor-car from a football match at Opotiki. L. Waugh, of Wliakutane, was driving the car, another occupant being Ronald Alillcr, of Hamilton. On arriving at the gorge, the party got out of the ear and Waugh adjusted the light. When returning to the car, AlePhce slipped and fell over the bank, a distance of 25 feet. An unavailing search was made for him. The btxly was recovered yesterday morning. At the- inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
THEFT CHARGE. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 3. At the Police Court, Andrew Anderson was sentenced to seven days for the theft of four letters, and one month for obtaining at Bulls, goods and money by false representation, tho sentences to he concurrent. The police stated that while going through Sanson, the accused, a swagger, robbed a private letter box and from a letter obtained a cheque which was presented at Hulls to a storekeeper, representing himself as the person to whom the cheque was payable. . \
MOTOR BUS BURNT. DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 3. When Neilson’s motor bus was returning to Norsewood from Dannevirkc late on Saturday night it hurst into flames, owing to a backfire. Tho only person in the has was Nelson who was driving. lie had great difficulty in opening the door and making his escape. He is now hospitalled at Ormondville with burns about the face, hands and legs, and is also suffering from shock.
