Australian Press Assn.—United Service EMPIRE CONFERENCE. OTTAWA, Aug. 30. The Empire Parliamntarians to-day discussed Empire marketing. Mr Thomas Johnston (Britain) gave a detailed description of the functions of the Marketing Board, and expressed the hope that through its medium in-ter-imperial trade might further he fostered. Emphasis was laid on the importance of continuity of supply and of the quality of the product. Some divergence of opinion developed on the question of the “spread” between the producer’s receipt and what the consumer ultimately pays. Mr Jordan (New Zealand) complained of the operation of the middleman. He cited a case where a cargo of wheat changed hands twelve times. Mr Willianis'(Britnin) disagreed with the view that there was an unfair “spread” between the producer and the consumer. Mr Bennett stated the Canadian wheat pcoh had done much to reduce this disparity. Mr Shaw (Britain) took sharp issue with Mr Williams, who had insisted that between the producer and the consumer the difference in price was often a great one. Mr Malcolm (Canadian Minister) eulogised the Marketing Board, lmt stated the Dominions should pay ( their own advertising, and should also send trade commissioners to Canada as* that country did to them. There was no formal resolution, Inthere was a general feeling that steps were necessary to reduce the divergence between the original and the ultimate price. "Nf-KWI YOR-K Aug. 30.
