The tally of opossums taken in tlie Westland district for the past season, now approximates 14,000 skins and exceeds the previous season’s catch. An extraordinary position has arisen in the Wanganui Harbour Board’s claim for salvage of the Gale, which was concluded at Wellington on Tuesday, liv the sudden death of the presiding Judge, Sir William Sim, states the Wanganui correspondent of the “ Lyttelton Times.” Tlie Judge had intimated that he intended to go south on Wednesday, and would not lie able to give his decision before then, hut would do so as soon as possible. The fates decreed otherwise, and it is highly improbable that the Judge had completed his written decision before his death. This will mean that proceedings will have to he launched afresh. His Honor during the ease appeared to be very pale, but otherwise seemed to be all right, and lie took a lively interest in the proceedings throughout.

The death took place at Grey River Hospital this morning of Airs Agnes Furness, widow of the late Edward Furness. Deceased was a native of Hokitika and 55 years of age. She was a member of the Douglas family formerly of Arahura. Four sons and a daughter are left to mourn their loss. Afr R. Furness, of Hokitika, is a son.
The license of the Caledonian Hotel at Stafford, which was recently destroyed by fire, lias been allowed to lapse. There is therefore at least one township on the AVest Coast which is minus an hotel. Til 1870, five years after the gold rush commenced, Stafford had thirty-seven hotels and a very large population.
At the Grey Competitions yesterday, the Ladies’ Sacred Solo, own selection, final resulted:—Aliss B. Adkins 80pts 1, Miss Ar. Bahl (Hokitika) 79pts 2, Aliss Irene Gillooly (Hokitika) 78pts 3. The. judge paid high tributes to the .’placed competitors, stating tho winner had a fine stage presence. The second place-getter had attempted an ambitious piece which required a little more light and shade than it received, while the third place-getter gave a good rendition.
The informal opening of the All Saints’ Social Hall took place last evening when a dance social was held at which about 130 persons were present and an enjoyable evening was spent. The ladies of tho congregation provided supper and the music was voluntary. Shortly a stage and proscenium will he added to the building which will increase its usefulness. Air D. J. Evans has kindly donated £5 to the building fund. A formal opening will take place latci.
In connection with the flight of the “Southern Cross” timed to begin from Svdnev at 6 o’clock this (Saturday' night 3Y.A. broadcasting station at Christchurch will he in touch with the aeroplane by short wave throughout the progress of flic flight. From time to time all through the night 3Y.A. will broadcast progress reports, and these in turn will lie rebroadcasted by other New Zealand stations, up to the time of the arrival at the Christchurch aerodrome. No doubt many listcnoisin will spend most of the night listening to tho story of the flight.
