The A rah lira school room is undergoing special preparations for the Grand Ball in aid of the funds which is to be held on Wednesday evening. This promises to he as usual a very successful gathering. The ladies’ committee have the catering in hand and will supply a very dainty supper. Keep Wednesday evening for this popular outing.
An accident occurred yesterday on the steamer Halls Head at Grey month, when additional mooring lines were being put out, as a precaution against a possible strong fresh in the river. A chain slipi>ed on the winch, and struck the chief officer. Mr Harrison-George. of Sydney, fracturing one of his legs. He is making favourable progress in the Greymouth Hospital.
'When crossing; the Grey bar oil Monday evening, outward hound, the steamers Kaiinai and Balts Head both touched the bar. The bumps were* slight, and no damage was done. There was a depth of 21 feet on the bar, and the vessels were each drawing about 16 feet- 3 idles. A fairly heavy swell was running, and this caused the mishaps.

Mr E. A. Wells, County Chairman, accompanied hy members of the Northern Riding., visited South West-land during the week-end, and returned yesterday. Wait aha, Harihari, Wataron, Okarito. Waiho and, Wolieka settlements were visited. At Lower Matanui die start of the route for the Wataroa-Little Wanganui stock track was viewed, and later the views of the settlers at Mataimii and Harihari were heard in respect to the value of the proposed road. Mr Wells is to report to the Council on the matter at the Council meeting in a fortnight’s time.

The Kokatahi Ladies’ Hockey Club hall took placo last evening in the Kokatahi Public Hall. There was a large. attendan'eo present from all parts of the district. The Black Hand Orchestra supplied capital music, and an excellent supper was provided by the members of the Club. Dancing was kept going merrily till an early hour the ball proving very successful.
Prizes in connection with the recent Competitions will be presented immediately. The trophies will be presented at the annual social of the Society, arangements for which will lie made by the Committee which'meets next week to settle the accounts in with the festival which concludes to-night with a. grand concert.
There is again a large demand for scats upstairs at the Princess Theatre to-night for the Demonstration Concert. Only a few seats are left upstairs. The doors to-night will open at 7 o’clock and the performance will begin at 7.-15 sharp. The audience is requested to be seated punctually, as there is a lengthy programme to lie disposed of. There are several special items set down for To-night and another enjoyable concert should result.
A sudden death occurred at 7 o’clock last evening underground at the Dol>son Coal Mine. A miner, James Gibb, about 50 years of age, was engaged working at the face with his mate, when lie had a sudden seizure, and it proved fatal. Deceased had been apparently in good health prior to the fatality. He leaves a wife, who resides in Scotland, and a family. One son and one daughter of deceased aro residing at Hobson. - An inquest will be held.
The benefit dance for the Hokitika Beautifying Society set down for tomorrow evening will lie a popular event. The Jazz Club has organised the evening, and its orchestra will he on duty. Supper will he served as usual. The condition of the floor for the occasion leaves nothing to he desired. Votaries arc therefore assured of a perfect long night dance. Aw the proceeds will be devoted to a most worthy civic purpose, there is another reason for substantial support, and a large attendance is expected. Dancing commences at 8.30 o’clock and will continue to 1 a. m.
During the year ended March 31st., 11)28, 2333 films, of a total length of 5.813.810 ft, were censored. Of this number sixtv-nine were rejected in the first instance, 245 were passed subject to excisions, and forty-four were passed for adult audiences only. There were two appeals against the decisions of the censor in reference to censored films. In one case the censor’s view was upheld. The total number of British Empire films examined was 585. including features, topienls, etc., and the total length was 71(1,670ft. Feature films—viz., those over 'loooft in length—totalled (128, while the remaining 170) films comprised topicals, seonics, serials, comedies, cartoons, industrials, etc., seldom exceeding 200011 each. Of the feature films, thirty-five were produced in the British Empire, 580 in the United States of America, and thirteen originated in Germany, Era nee, Italyl. and Sweden.
