A 'shopkeeper’s responsibility to a customer who enters his shop was mentioned l>y -Mr E. Rage, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court in the course of a judgment. “The duty of tin occupier towards a person who lawfully enters upon the premises is to use reasonable care for the safety of that person,” said Mr Rage. “He is hound to use reasonable care in ascertaining any dangers which exist on the premises and to guard sufficiently against damage accruing therefrom. The rule applies not merely to the land or buildings, hut also to the chattels thereon.”
Tlio deatn occurred on Friday of Mr Richard' Seddon Cunliffe, eldest son of tho late Mr and Mrs Win. Cunliffe, of Marsden Road, at his residence, Eitzlierbcrt Street, Petone, after a short illness. He leaves five sisters, Mr Gus Scliaef (Greymouth), Mrs FI. I). Edwards (Hataitui), Mrs West (Hataitai), Mrs S. P. Eddy (Milton), and Miss Cunliffe of the Greymouth Library, and two brothers, Tom Cunliffe (Greymouth), and Will. Cunliffe (Railway Department, Bluff). Deceased was 64 years of age and served his time ns a printer with “The Greymouth Star” Co. He leaves a widow, one son and oiie daughter. He was keenly interested in the Druids’ and was the promoter of Druid ism in Petone and for many years president of the Working Men’s Club there.
Diptheria is prevalent at the Greymouth Hospital, and all the patients in the Seddon Ward have been isolated. Reporting to the Hospital Board last week, the medical superintendent suggested that the outbreak was possibly due to the opening of drains in connection with building operations. His report stated 1 : “1 regret to have to report an outbreak of diphtheria, which lias occurred during the last two to three weeks in the Seddon Ward, and which lias proved more general during the last few days. In all, eleven cases have occurred, and as yet, though bacteriological investigations have been carried out, no causative factor has lieen discovered. One patient was suspected of being a carrier, hut a longer period than the incubation period for diphtheria has elapsed since isolation was enforced in this case and yet many more cases have occurred 1 . It has been noted that since the building programme started, with its consequent opening up of drains during the last ten months, diphtheria, lias regularly occurred at intervals among the hospital staff and the patients. This may he merely coincidence, and is certainly not .scientific assumption, but the fact remains. Fortunately the disease is not serious, and’ all the patients being adults, a satisfactory recovery will follow.”
