THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

An OitmNTAi, Alonuof. Dootkink. This proposal will very likely arouse a. great deal of surprise and indignation on this side of the world. And wo must realise that it concerns the people of New Zealand vitally. For, as a cabled comment recently explained, “it would be practically equivalent to a- declaration of a Japanese Alonroo Doctrine for Asia, Australia, ami New Zealand,” so far as the United States are concerned. And this would mean that if the Americans accepted such a proposal they would hind themselves not to interfere on our behalf if Japan should ever attempt to force a policy of unrestricted immigration upon us. —Auckland Paper.
