NEW ZEALAND CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 23. • The ann mil conference of delegates of the New Zealand Boxing Association was held to-day, Air E. A. Craie presiding. Tn the annual report, which was adopted, the President referred to the satisfactory progress made during the past- year, particularly in regard to amateur boxing. There had been a steady growth of fhc sport, which was most gratifying. The balance sheet was also adopted. It disclosed a satisfactory credit balance.
Tho question of the insurance of boxers was brought up by AH' AV. G. Talbot (Wellington), who put forward i> comprehensive scheme whereby the N.Z. Association would take its own risk. Each Association would pay into three trustees two per cent of the gross (proceeds of every tournament, until a fund of C2DO was accumulated. The scheme was adopted, and Messrs* J. R. Simpson, AV. G. Talbot, and J. AV. Keenan were appointed a#* Trustees. Tho AA’cllington Boxing Association forthwith placed .£IOO into the fund, and tlie Auckland and Dunedin Associations £SO each. A remit from tho Northern Boxing Association that the Associations should have the right of paying £2OO purses without applying * for permission from the N.Z. Council was brought forward by Air AA r . R. Dervan. .
Air AV. G. Talbot (AA’elliiigton) suggested an addition, that the expenses in addition to the purse should not exceed £SO; and Mr Dervan agreed to this.
However, the representatives of the smaller Associations did not favour the proposition. They held that they were not in the position to pay over £l5O in purses and had frequently lost the servees of prominent boxers when more wealthy Associations had offered larger purses. The remit was lost. A resolution deprecating the movement to set up a separate Association to control amateur boxing was passed. On the motion of the President, the meeting affirmed the principle of the existing law, that boxing, both amateur and professional, should ho eontrolled by citizens in Associations for the love of the sport and not for pecuniary gain. ] The motion expressed the opinion that the existing unified control was in the host interests of both the sport and of tho public, If Parliament granted the petition made by the socalled Amateur Boxing Association chaos would ensue, and the result would lie the encouragement of cash amateurism, and the introduction of the private promoter. Tho meeting urged the N.Z. Boxing Council to combat the attempt to alter the present control. The President referred to the success of E. Alorgan, the Wellington welter-weight boxer, in winning his class at the Olympic Gaines, and in securing the world’s amateur honours. It was decided to congratulate the Wellington Association on Morgan’s achievement. It was also decided to act on a suggestion by Air D. R. Hoggard, of the New Zealand Council, to establish a Alorgan Cup to lie competed for annually in the welter-weight class at the N.Z. championship tournament. It was decided hold the next annual tournament at Greymouth. Air A. Behan, of Greymouth, was appointed the next President of the New Zealand Boxing Association. Messrs A. Craig (Auckland) and C. P. Agar (Christchurch) were elected Vice-Presidents.
