QUICKEST shot in the world Bisley Camp July 11.
A mail who lias lingers like those of a surgeon and-who is believed to be the quickest rifle shot in the world was firing here to-day. He is Mr .T. W. Watford, formerly a corporal in the Welch Regiment, and now employed at an ammunition factory. . . , Standing with his rifle pointing through a loophole, Mr Watford, m the presence of several witnesses, was timed to have fired (if) rounds within 60 seconds. It was the simulation of tn<> repulse at ‘lose quarters of an eneiiiv attack on a trench, and every shot pierced a cardboard target IS inches square placed 25 yards from the loophole. It took him two years, lie told me, to reach liis present proficiency. Another of Mr Watford’s feats with the .service rifle was the burning of four wooden stocks from their barrels. He- did this by firing “rapid” for several hours, and each rifle stock eventually burst into flame. Air Walford protected his hands with special gloves. WOMAN SAVES AN EXPRESS. PARIS. July 12. The signalman had left his Ivos to ,speak to the driver of a goods train, which he had stopped in the darkness, when the “Blue Train” to Biarritz rushed by. A projecting footboard struck the signalman and killed him instantly The driver of the goods train wakonen Mine. Fredan, who lived in a house beside the line, and told her what had happened. Half-dressed, she ran to lier husband’s signal cabin and continued to work the signals, ensuring the safety of the trains in her own and the adjoining sections until a relief signalman arrived. Then she fainted as she handed over the levers to the relief.
