RANFURLY SHIELD. WELLINGTON DEFEATED. BY 9 TO 3. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. CARTERTON, August 22. Wairarapa and Wellington met at Carterton to-day in a Ranfurly Shield match. The weather was splendid, there being practically no wind. The attendance was between four and five thousand.
The Wellington forwards, led by Porter and Sly, with Coulston, Blacker and Shearer well up, commenced to attack, hut determined resistance sent them hack. Returning after a short spell Ramson for illegal tactics in the scrum, had a shot at goal; ten yards inside the half. The ball passed just inside the half. Within a few minutes, Q. Donald was caught offside in front of tho goal, and Ramson had another try at goal, this time from a yard inside half way, and landed a beautiful goal.
5 Wairarapa livened up and drove 5 Wellington bnck to the 25. After " pretty work by Sharp and Cooke, the i latter centred and recovered. Mnekny 5 tackled him and Ramson speculated, ? finding the corner flag. Porter receiv--5 cd from the line out, and relieved with 1 a fine kick to the 25. Wairarapa re- ! turned the attack and Hart opened up > two promising efforts, but the defence 1 was too solid, and both stopped short--1 of their object. Handling in tho scrum 5 gave Porter a chance to relieve, and lie 1 lined near the 25 flag. Another Wsii- > rarapa rush looked very dangerous till Cummings took a timely mark and rec Moved. With play in the centre of the field, Coman gave a clever dummy and 2 ran down the line, passing to Mneltay. ? The latter ran brilliantly till Yates upset him. Shortly after Porter was illegally tackled by Q. Donald midway between half way and the 25, slightly >’ to tlio side. Ramson made a good 1 effort, but missed. Roach fielded well 1 out and lined near half way. Followk ing tlie tlirow-in, Cooke centred from a 1 passing rush, and Stringfellow arrived ' at Cummings with the ball. -Porter 1 and his forwards rallied round, and a j severe tussle took place near the goal 2 directly in front. A free kick to Wai- > rarapa for faulty scrumming gave ' Cooke a chance, hut lie kicked a poster. 1 Conian sent McKenzie, Brown, and 1 Porter away, and the latter crossed, ' only to he brought- back by the line umpire. After a period of give and take, Cooke was tackled without the ball, and \ T ates goalod with a fine kick from ten yards inside the half way, making the score equal. Ramson then made spectacular play. Sharpe, Cooke, and Stringfellow were passing prettily in the Wellington 25, when Ramson intercepted, ran well, 1 and' passed to Shearer, and to Chaney, hut the Wairarapa forwards pncke.l ■ round and saved. Wairarapa set up a vigorous attack, the forwards and backs all taking part, and the movement ended in the hall bouncing o.T Willoughby’s Knee and over the- line. Cummings and McKenzie both dive ! and missed, and Sharpe scored close to the goal. Yates kicked the placer’s hand in stead of the hall.—Wairarapa G: Wellington 3. There was no further score in the first spell. hi the second half Wairarapa held the ascendancy nearly all though, except for sudden forays which were very dangerous while they lasted. j There was spectacular play by both . sides, especially by the Wellington forwards. Had the latter been hacked up Hie result might have been different,; though it is difficult to say, as Ike tackling all round was very deadly an 1 solid. Wellington accepted four forces and Wairarapa one in the latter half. Mc'Konnie secured a high one from Cooke, ran in a dazzling manner, end transferred to Peterson, who got within two yards of the line and lost the ball. The forwards carried on a hot melee which ended in McGregor forcing just in time. Well on towards the end of , the game, Stringfellow sent high to Cummings, lie and Hart arriving as the hall reached Cummings’ arms. He | passed wildly to Mnekny, who was I tackled by Hart. As he kicked, Stringfclow charged the kick down, and the hall went out near the Wellington corner. Comnn relieved with a good line kick, hut Wairarapa returned. Cooke essayed a cut-in to the goal, but was grounded. Chaney, shot the hall hack to Sharpe, who punted. Stringfellow gathered and passed to Cooke, the latter sending on to Yates, who was floored at tlio corner by Peterson, Porter sending the ball into touch. Sharpe and Cooke wore again associated ill an effort, the latter being I tackled, but getting up and carrying j ’on, but ho was tackled again, and, lost the hall. As he fell, Q. Donald dived ' ' through the ruck to score. Yates took | tue kick, and missed, hut was awarded | ' another kick on account of being | charged too soon, hut again missed. NORTH V. SOUTH HAWKE’S BAY. DANNEVIRTvE, August 22. The Rugby football match between North and South Hawke’s Bay was J won by the South by 11 to S, Parker scoring a brilliant try at the last minute. AUCKLAND ’VARSITY V. FIJI SECONDS. SUVA, August 22. Auckland. Varsity Rugby team today defeated the Fiji second fifteen by 11 points to 10. LEAGUE TEAM BEATEN. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 22. After a fast and open exhibition of tlio League code, New Zealand bent England to-day by 27—20. The weather was ideal and the ground in capital order. The attendance was large. J. Parkin, the English captain, made his first appearance after being incapacitated for two months, and was responsible for a fine exhibition of halfback play. The visiting rearguard handled more accurately than their opponents, and would have scored further tries had infringements been less frequent. On the other hand, New Zealand’s score would have been greater had Dufty turned to better account the opportunities that came his way.
