(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. THE MAUI FOMARE. .MACHINERY TESTS COMPLETED. AUCKLAND, August 21. The enquiry into the causes of the loss of the cargo of bananas carried from the islands by the Government motor-ship Maui Poniare was virtually concluded late this afternoon. To-night a further test of the engines, particularly the refrigerating apparatus, was conducted and the results will he coordinated to-morrow with other information gleaned by investigators in the past two days. Since the ship has been in port the refrigerating machinery has been kept running, it is stated, in a completely satisfactory manner, the hold temperature being maintained at a level well below that required for the effective storage of fruit.

Mr S. J. Smith, secretary of the Cook Islands Department, left for Wellington by the Limited express this evening.

CENTRAL OTAGO IRRIGATION DUNEDIN, August 21.

The final evidence before the committee of enquiry into the Otago Central irrigation scheme was given to-day by the Otago Expansion League president, Mr S. B. Macdonald, who urged that the land should he classified according to productive value and water charges graduated accordingly, that the linvoe wrought by over-irrigation and had drainage in Ida Valley be rectified at the Government’s charge ; and also that the Agricultural Department should play n more important part in the selection of the irrigable country. Races had been constructed in some eases to irrigate land not worth irrigation.

MISSING SOLICITOR DECLARED bankrupt. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22. A meeting of the creditors of .T. B. Batchelor lsolieitor called by ' advertisomnt was bold to-day. About fifty were pVescnt. Batehe’or left Christchurch early this month, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant is still unexecuted. The meeting to-day was held in camera. There was no means of ascertaining the total amount of debts, hut it was evident that they were considerable. The meeting decided that Batchelor he made a bankrupt, and a solicitor was instructed accordingly. The chairman stated, after the meeting, that he believed the total debts would amount to £GOCO, hut the exact amount was vet unknown. WAIPORI MARU HAS ANOTHER MISHAP. AUCKLAND, Aug. 22. The steamer Waipori Marti which was sold by the Union Company to Japanese, put back to Auckland to night for repairs to a circulating pump. This is the second occasion in six days this vessel has returned to Auckland in distress. She originally loft Auckland on August 14th. for Newcastle and Manilla. On August- 17th. the vessel put hack for bunker coal, and resumed her voyage next day. On the present occasion tho vessel was 130 miles west of North Cape and experienced boisterous west north west weather, when an accident to the pv. i:p occurred. Owing to- the rough weather repairs could not he effected at -sea. Tho vessel expects to resume her voyage on Friday.

ILL TREATMENT OF CALVES. NEW PLYMOUTH. Aug. 22

The treatment c-f bobby cB-'ves when being co-Uer-ted for the freezing works was again tho subject of prosecution in the Police Court to-day. Percy John Northcott, lorry driver, reflected the calves, and placed then on a truck at Opunake, expecting tho train to leave the same afternoon. However, the train did not leave till -•'out twenty-four hours later, arc N -thc-ott was charged by the S.P.C.A. with net supplying the calves with nourishment. lie was convicted and ordered to pay costs. \ 1 "" 1 ggwwwia
