LATE LOCALS.

The rainfall in the country appears to have been very heavy.this torenoon, especially in the neighbourhood of Kauiori Forks. As a consequence the Left Hand branch of the Kanieri river rose rapidly and washed out the eastern approach to the bridge, near Havill’s, oil Lake Kanieri road, interrupting all wheel traffic. On the matter being reported, the County authorities took steps to re-open traffic and the best possible is being done to-day. Some damage also was caused to the lake water race serving the power station at the Forks, and in consequence of the precarious position the auxiliary station at Hokitika was started up at 1.30 o’clock this afternoon. A party of men was organised to go out and repair the damage, the fulj extent of which is not yet known.
