HAMMOND’S PLAY. Australian Press Assn.—United Service LONDON, Aug. 22. Hobbs, in a special article, says that d(espite sensational performances against Surrey alnd Worcentershire, Hammond should not be regarded seriously as a great bowler. In Australia he would be an ordinary change bowler. I anticipate his best feats will be batting and catching. He will probably make a lot of runs. There is no question that he is a remarkable catcher. He. seems to take the ball almost off the bat. He must have an eye like a hawk. His ten catches at 'Cheltenham yesterday week was an extraordinary feat for 0 second slip, or in the gulley. His bowling, bowfever, was less sensational for there was a dusty wicket. Lancashire seems certain to win the County championship. By good batting the eleven lias made some fine scores, but I think the deciding factor, in their success, is MacDonald’s bowling, and without his performances I doubt whether Lancashire would be heading the list. MacDonald is, at present third op the list of County averages with 165 wickets, average 18.58. Larwood and Freeman precede him.
