(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. The Legislative Council met at 2.31) p.m. The Law Practitioners Amendment Bill (Hon. J. Alac.Tfrc-gor) was introduced and read a first time. The Council adjourned at 2.35 p.m. until Wednesday next. _y THE HOUSE. In the House of Representatives the debate oil the Budget • was concluded by the reply of Hon. Downie Stewart, after which the House went into Committee of Supply to consider the first item on the Estimates, Legislative Departments £35,591. The Lead - or ol the Opposition protested against the long hours tlie House was called upon to sit and as a protest moved the vote be reduced by £lO. A discussion on this amendment continued •till 1.30 when the amendment was defeated by 42 to 1(3. A further amendment that it be reduced, by £9 as a protest against the appointment of the General Alannger of Railways was also defeated by 43 to 15. The House rose at 2.10 till 2.30
