Mr G. Lakin, secretary of the Hokitika Fire Brigade, received advice yesterday afternoon that the invitation to the New Zealand Fire Brigades Association to hold the annual conference of delegates and two-yearly demonstration at Hokitika in .March next, had been accepted.

The Competitions were on loth this forenoon and afternoon. To-night the Theatre will be occupied with a display by Everylnxly-’s Pictures. The first Demonstration Concert takes place at the Theatre to-morrow night, when it is expected, with tbe heavy booking already recorded, there will be n bumper bouse. There is a fine programme for the evening’s entertainment including some of tbe juvenile performers who have not appeared in the evenings heretofore.

A young man who appeared on remand at the Juvenile Court, Greymonth', on Monday was charged with indecently assaulting a little girl at Greymouth on Wednesday afternoon last. Accused, who was represented by .Mr W. J. Joyce, pleaded not guilty, reserving bis defence, and was committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Greymouth for trial. Bail was renewed, self in £IOO and two sureties of £SO each. A charge of common assault was withdrawn.

Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in tbe Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts during the week ended noon on Monday totalled 92, as follows:—Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 57 (from the metropolitan area, 12): diphtheria, 4; tuberculosis, 7; pneumonia, 9; pneumonic influenza, 8; erysipelas, 1; cerebro-spinal meningitis, 1 ; puerperal sepsis. 2. West Coast: Diphtheria, 2; tuberculosis 1. There were four deaths in the Canterbury district, two each from tuberculosis and pneumonia.

The Justice Department announces a number off important staff changes. Mr W. D. Wallace, registrar of the Supreme Court at Dunedin, has been transferred to fill a similar vacancy in Christchurch, and lie will be replaced at Dunedin by Mr .T. N. Adan, from Invercargill. Mr H. Morgan, of Hamilton, becomes registrar of the Supreme Court at Invercargill, and the Hamilton vacancy will be filled by the promotion of Mr G. S. Clark, deputy registrar at Wellington, whose position, in turn, will be filled by the promotion of Mr E. G. Rhodes.

Through tbe courtesy of tbe committee controlling the Twenty-ninth International Eucharistic Congress, the New South Wales Broadcasting Company, Limited, has been able to arrange for the Papal Legate, his Eminence Cardinal Cerretti, to broadcast a message immediately upon his arrival in Sydney. His Eminence will speak from the home of Mrs F. B. Freehill, Buckhurst Avenue, Point Piper, at 8 p.m., on the night of August 30, and arrangements are now being completed by which the Interstate and New Zealand stations may relay the transmission. The transmission should be heard in New Zealand at 9.30 p.m.

'['lie Kokatahi Hockey Club’s Ball on Monday night next is attracting much attention. A large number of tickets have been sold ensuring a large attendance. Capital music will be provided by the Black Hand Orchestra, while the supper arrangements are in the hands of a capable ladies’ committee.

The traffic in coal from the West Coast to Christchurch has fallen off during the past week, and in consequence the traffic through the Otira Tunnel shows a decrease, compared with the corresponding period last year. The total for the last week was 10,372 tons. For the corresponding week last year, the total was 10,742 tons. This is the second occasion this year that the tunnel traffic has been less for a weekly period than in the year before.

Business:—Striking rates for the year ending the 31st .March. 1929, and general; 8 p.m., Special Meeting of the Council to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Borough of Hokitika, which was constituted on the 24th “August, 18GS. Ex-Councillors, and also the ex-Mayors of Ivumara and Boss, have been invited to attend.

Mrs H Beresfoid, who resided in Qreyniouth for many years, and tor some time in Wellington, died at Listers Hospital, yesterday morning. She was aged 73 and a native of London. When in Greymouth she took part in concerts lor the benefit of charities of all denominations. Her husband. who died many years ago, was engineer of tbe Westland Section of Railways. She leaves two daughters, .Mrs D. Hannan (Wellington), Miss Hilda Beresfoid (Alfredton), and three sisters, Mcsdames George Wylde (Greymouth), E. J. Smith (Christchurch), Mother M. Meelitildes, St. .Mary’s Convent, Christchurch.
