WESTLAND SUB-UNION MONDAY, AUGUST 20th. The Westland Sub-Union met at 8 p.m.—Prcsext: Messrs H. M. Coulson (chair), D. R. Dowell, H. McManaway, F. McGregor, S. Moore, R. McDonald, ■J. Coulson, J. Cooper, A. Cutbush, J. Williams, and J. Stafford. The referee’s report on WestlandGrey match was received and also the Grey-Hokitika junior match, manager’s report. Arahura third grade were granted permission to play a return match with United fourth grade. It was resolved to enquire as to a match between winners of northern and southern juniors (Blaketown and Ross) and if possible to have the game played as a curtain raiser to N.Z. v. Coast
Ross 'Club’s nomination for the Breeze Shield Competition was received. It was resolved to write to the Mcrivale Club inviting a visit to Hokitika and other Coast centres. An invitation was extended to proposed primary school visit in September and arrangements left in the hands of Mr Williamson. It was resolved to enquire as to SubUnion’s share of school grant. Tho Secretary was instructed to forward tho Sub-Unions congratulations to F. Freitas on his play in the North v. South match and his inclusion in the N.Z. test team to play N.o.W. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. Air J. Coulson was appointed referee for the senior match on Saturday at 3 p.m. Juniors—Kokatahi v. Ross at Ross (Air Willoughby). Third-grade—Excelsior v. School at 1.30 p.m. (Mr P. S. Aloore). COLLEGE TOURNAMENT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) NELSON, Aug. 20. The inter-Colleginte tournament concluded this afternoon in beautiful weather. On Saturday Nelson and Wellington played a drawn game and under the rules governing the tournament in such an event, the team longest out of the finals goes in, which in this case was Nelson.
AVangnnui easily accounted for Wellington by 2G to G. Wanganui played much better than on Saturday although tile opposition to-day was not so great. Tries for the winners by. Gieson (2), MacKenzie (2), and Bethel, and a penalty by Gieson, who also converted three tries. For the losers a try by Griffiths and a penalty by Te Afoium.
In the filial Nelson met much bigger and heavier opponents in Christchurch College, but put up a splendid fight and did creditably to be beaten by only 12 to (i. The local forwards played a fast game while the tackling of the whole side was deadly, and jiv'-ontH the fast Christchurch backs making the score much heavier. They threw the hall about delightfully and put in some thrilling movements. Gieson and AlacTvonzio showed . good play in the hacks and Bethel and Robertson forwards, while for Nelson Slmttleworth was outstanding. Bean and Aitken scored tries for the winners, AlcHardy a penalty and Lumsden converted a try, while Newman scored two penalties for Nelson.
