COCK FIGHT RAID
POLICE SURPRISE SPECTATORS. LONDON, June 20. The news leaked out late last night that while a number of men prominent, in racing circles were excitedly watching a carefully guarded cock-fight oil Monday in the remote Norfolk hamlet of New Buekenham, they were suddenly surprised by policemen, who stopped the contest. Between 40 and 50 men, many ol them well-to-do, had gone to the secret rendezvous at a farm and watched a terrific battle between two gamecocks armed with silver spurs. Within a radius of about half a mile of the building where tho fight was held guards were posted in a ring, iiicy had been instructed to give immediate warning of the approach ot any suspicious person.
Despite these precautions the police in plain clothes, who were working under Superintendent Carter, oi Wymondham, managed to pass through the cordon to the cockpit without raising the alarm. ' CONSTERNATION. Their arrival caused great consternation, as several of the spectators were men prominent in London social circles. It is understood that some magistrates were among the company. The first action of the police was to pick tip the cocks, thereby ending the contest. They then took the names of about twenty of the spectators. Later they took possession of a number of game cocks found on the premises and removed these to the police station. Proceedings are being taken by summons. The police have for months been trying to discover the scenes df the cockfights, which they knew were frequently taking place in Norfolk and the surrounding counties and attended n.' many sporting people from Newmarket.
The promoters of these illegal contests have taken the greatest care to make them as secret as possible. Not only are they always carefully guarded, but also tbe spectators are sworn never to reveal their existence.
It is understood that tho police success arose front an incident- at Ihetford, in Norfolk.
A liorse-box which is believed to have been on its way from Newmarket to New Buekenham with fighting-cocks inside broke down at T hetford.
Tbe local police were surprised to see this vehicle in Thetford, where it was on tbe way to no race meeting. Their suspicions were aroused.
