The course, although still dead, hud dried a great deal, and was in very fair winter condition. The tote for the day took £47,531} against £50,342 last year and for the meeting £139,835 against £156,619 last year. Results : Longbcach Handicap.—(4) Narrative 1, (3) Kalos 2, (6) Sarnia 3. Won by a length; half a length. Time 1.18 1-5. Aylesbury Steeplechase.—(2) Ttoyal Fashion 1, (5) Mntaipuke 2, (6) Hyperion 3. Won by a length and a-lialf; six lengths. Time 5.38 2-5. Captain Sarto broke his back and was destroyed. Sydenham Hurdles.—(3) Craigmore 1, (5) Ivi!burn '2, (1) lied Fuchsia 3. Won by three lengths; a neck. Time 3.57 4-5. Styx Hurdles.—(9) Carinthia 1, (10) Red Heather 2, (3) Nine of Spades 3. Won by eight lengths; a neck. Time 3.7. Lincoln Steeples.—(4) Rangi Sarto 1, (1) Radiate 2, (7) Tuki 3. Won comfortably by three lengths; two lengths. 'Time 6.0 4-5. Heatheote Handicap.—-(1) Black Mint 1, (5) Kilmiss 2, (3) Town Rank 3. Won by half a length ; a length. Time 1.47 2-5. Redcliffs Handicap.—(l) Historic 1. (5) Boy 2, (2) Tori 3. Won by a length ; two lengths. Time 1.33. Selwyn Handicap.— (7) Royal Saxon 1, (4) Battle Colours 2, (2) Pangolin 3. Won by a length ; two lengths. Time 1.33. Dumblane, who was well backed in the Longbcach Handicap, was pulled up soon after the start. An examination later on showed that he had broken his off fore pastern. He will tie taken home and an attempt will be made to patch him up. When Captain Sarto fell in the Aylesbury Steeplechase. I’.e broke his back, and was destroyed. SYDNEY, August 19. New Zealand horses opened the spring campaign well at Rosehill races. There was fine weather. Roscrea, a half brother to Ballymena, easily won its race in good style, and Fool’s Paradise just missed registering a win. Roscrea’s style impressed the critics. Results:— Tliree-year-old Handicap.—Roscrea 8.9 1 ; Canberra Florin 8.12 and Saltpan 8.2, a dead heat 2. There were 19 starters. Won by three lengths. Time 1.27. Highweiglit Handicap, second division.—Figure 9.6 1; Habashon 9.6 2; Fool’s Paradise 10.0 3. Fourteen started. Won by a length. Time 1.133.
