On Friday, the result of heavy rain, says the “Lyttelton Times,’’ the Tvaikoura inland road from AVaiau was impassable. The heavy snowstorms resulted in several breaks in the telegraph line between AVaiau and Ivaikoura. Temporary repairs are being effected, but permanent repair work will occupy some time. Telegraph communication with the -North Island-is being maintained via Cheviot.

The Westland Competitions opened successfully to-day at- the Princess Theatre, and will continue daily till next Thursday, when there will be a grand demonstration night. Tickets for the latter are selling rapidly, and seats are being booked. Intending country visitors should apply early if they purpose attending the demonstration concert. Patrons will find family tickets of service for the day and night sessions, and these may lie purchased at the doors. Dress circle seats for the demonstration concert will lie 2s plus 6d booking fee. 11l connection with the recent dismissal bv the Buller Hospital Board of tho matron of the Maternity Home, the following letter was received at this week’s meeting of the board from the Director-General of Health (Dr T. H. A. Valintine) : “It would appear that Miss M’Donald, who has been matron of your maternity hospital, lias been treated with very scant justice. In view of the facts that have recently come before me I would suggest you reinstate Miss M’Donald and convey to her that her resignation was brought about on account of a misapprehension on the part of your hoard in that it did not know the facts that led to her resignation.” After a lengthy discussion the board decided to adhere to its previous decision. The secretary was instructed to communicate with one of three applicants for the vacancy, and failing her acceptance to readver-’ tise the position. For the position of assistant at the maternity hospital Nurse AA’. Greig, of Akaroa Maternity Hospital, was appointed.

A. party of hoys and girls from the Reefton State School paid a visit to Hokitika, arriving on Thursday evening. and left for home this morning by train.
