RAILWAY CONNECTION

URGED OX GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AVELLIXGTOX, Aug. 10. The completion of the Nelson-West Coast railway, through the Buliev Gorge, was urged on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works this evening by a large and representative deputation from the districts concerned. Several members of Parliament were in attendance.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr H. E. Holland, said that the whole of the Buller district was whole-hearted-ly supporting the proposal of the deputation, and Air Scddoti (Westland) made a- similar statement with reference to the views of the people of the whole of the West Coast. The case b>r the deputation was made by numerous speakers and the Government was reminded of the promises which it had made regarding pushing on with the undertaking. 'Phe Prime Alinister said that it was true that promises had been made and he did not propose to contest them. The selection of lines, in the order of importance, had been gone into some years ago, when it was found from a strictly commercial point, of view, that the Nelson-West Coast line was not attractive, as the capital cost for the completion would run into £200,000. Various routes had been investigated, and they had come hack to the Buller loutc. which had been selected. The cost of construction on this section was estimated to be about £30.000 a mile. The Prime Ministe- recalled that motor transport services had been inaugurated from the railhead to Murchison, hut those services had not been introduced with the idea of shelving the construction of the line, which he considered to he desirable. The question of development was of greater importance than the commercial aspect of the work. He asked the deputation to regard the railway as from the broadest point of view, pointing out that there were other works in hand, which must he completed. As the expenditure on these works decreased, more money would be available for other undertakings. AVhon Cabinet was considering the Public Works Estimates, he would consult with Messrs Hudson and Atmorc regarding the work advocated by the deputation. ___
