WESTLAND RACING CLUB

The following letter, addressed to tho Editor of the Christchurch Press, appeared in that paper yesterday:— Sir,—Tho news relating to the destruction by fire of the Westland Racing Club’s new grandstand and stewards’ stand will bo generally regretted throughout Canterbury. Unlike most country clubs throughout the Dominion, it has had to contend against the possibility of bad weather conditions since its existence, and the uncertainty of tho elements must have detracted from the club’s meetings in tho past. Despite this fact, however, tho enterprising committee has made a point of catering in every possible way for the- comfort pf its patrons, and occurring when it did the fire demolished the buildings at a time when they were most complete in every detail. The Westland Racing Club, like other comparatively small clubs, has had to pay, of course, its share of taxation, and when the institution expected to be recouped for the outlay incurred in installing most upt-o-date appointments, their destruction must he regarded as most ■ unfortunate. Under such circumstances, could it not be arranged for the club to hold a meeting at Riccarton in order to improve its financial position? Some of the smaller clubs in the country have been allowed to do so.—Your, etc.. W.R. Christchurch, August 13th,
