In fine weather, before a large atendance for mid-week, the Bailor reps this afternoon defeated the Southland touring team by 11 points to 3. The game was a,very strenuous one. The Buller forwards dominated the play, but at times both of the hack divisions showed individual’ and collective brilliancy. Sound: tackling was the order of the day. At half-time, Buller led by B—o, tries being scored by Caldwell and Robinson, "and one being converted by Caldwell. In the second spell, CaldweTT added another unconverted try for Buller. and Dempster scored three points Tor Southland with a penalty goal. Galt, Hamer, Ashhv, Purdue and Horner (forwards), and Lee. Ottrey and Lning (backs) were outstanding for the visitors. while Griffiths and Quinn (backs) were particularly prominent for Buller, with all the forwards playing well. NORTH V. SOUTH AIATCPI. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. For the inter-Island match to-moi-row. 1,. Roach (AVairarapa) plays fullback and L. Arinn replaces L. Hoax as centre for the North. The Southern team is as selected. RANFUBLY SHIELD. CARTERTON, Aug. 17. The Alnrlborough footballers arrived at Carterton for the Ranfurl.v Shield match to-morrow. Alouatt will not he placing. Devine replacing him on the side of the scrum and Glennie taking Devine’s place in the hack row. Payne is second emergency. AAairarapa m be without the services of six players who have gone south with the North Island team. Roach who was not originally selected has now gone witn Cooke out from the five-eighths line. Roach lias gone from full-back and the forwards are depleted. Marlborough is confident of lifting the shield. The weather is cloudy but rain has ceased.
