FIRE AT MENTAL HOSPITAL

HA Y SHED D ESTRO Y ED. The fireballs rang out an alarm of fire at 12.20 o’clock this morning, the cause of the alarm being an outbreak of fire in the Mental Hospital grounds, in a havshed, near the Recreation Hall, at the rear of the main buildings. A dance was in progress in the Hall at the time of the outbreak, a

number of visitors from town being present. The fire when discovered spread very rapidly, the havshed containing a large quantity of hay which fed the flames very rapidly and the structure was soon one mass of flames. The alarm was promptly given and soon a large crowd gathered from town. The water pressure available from the town supply is not strong, owing to the altitude of the hospital, while there is only a three inch pipe supply. The water was sufficient, however to enable the flames to be got under, though the building was gutted and the contents destroyed, which included some farm implements, and a lime spreader. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The Fire Brigade went to the scene as promptly as possible, motor cars -being utilised, but the Hospital euipment was utilised for the fire fighting, and nothing could he done, much relief being expressed that the residential quarters were not affected.
