The opossum season closed last Saturday, and the trappers are now bringing in their catch. Generally speaking the trappers appear satisfied with their luck, particularly those in the Koka-tahi-Kanieri Lakq-Arahura territory. It is believed, however that the stock has had a good cleaning up this season and though the total will he very satisfactory and probably equal to that of last season, many trappers believe it would be wise to enforce a close season for a period. Jt is understood this season the country was trapped further back than usual, thus accounting for the belief that the territory has been well combed and a rest is essential to permit the useful little animal to increase in numbers again.

The anxiety shown hv members this session over New Zealand* prospects of maintaining its supply of phosphate rock from Nauru and Ocean islands prompted tin' Hon O. J. HowUon. Minister of Agriculture, to make a. lengthy statement, in the House on Wednesday. “There is,” lie said, “no leason to fear that flic available supplies of phosphate rock at Nauru and Teean islands will not he sufficient in quantity to meet the requirements of New Zealand for many years to come, as it has been estimated that supplies of rock existing on the two islands will probably reach at least 100,(’00,000 ton • The position as to immediately available supplies is governed by the existing facilities lor shipment. At the present time the lull capacity of the islands, from the point of view of what can be shipped, is approximately 550.000 ton per annum, though during the year ended June 30, 1027, close upon 000.000 tons were shipped.”
A parasite ol the common bidi-bidi, Ihe seeds of which cause serious damage to live wool, is being imported front Chile to New /aland, according to the annual report of the Canterbury Sheepowners" 1 nion. The report states that highly valuable work was Itoiiig undertaken by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in the search of some parasitical insect. AVord had recently been received from Chile of the discovery of an insect which was stated to he a parasite of this plant. This insect attacked the weed and prevented it front seeding. Tito Department hoped that the introduction of the insect would he a move in the direction of ridding the Dominion of this curse to pastoralists. Supplies or the insect were being forwarded to Now Zealand with a view to experiment and the study of its life history, as should it prove also an enemy to clovers and other desirable forms of vegetation, its introduction to the Dominion might well prove a curse instead of a blessing.
The jubilee of the Hokitika municipality which falls to l>e held next Fridiiv is to he recognised by the Hokitika Borough Council in quite a modest way. The present Council has its hands full in regard to prospective expenditure for drainage works and water supply matters, and is not disposed to incur any considerable expense in an elaborate celebration. As next Friday is also the ordinary meeting of the Council the date proves coincident. A special meeting is to be held to which ex-Councillors will be invited and the occasion will be referred to suitably. 'Pho public will be invited to attend also. As a souvenir of the occasion it has lieen suggested the present Council should be photographed so as to bo placed beside the photgrapli of the first Municipal Council, which already hangs in the Town Hall. Bo modest a programme of celebration indicates that the present Council is paying special consideration to the husbanding of the rates for the more pressing requirements of civic amenities, instead of an outlay on jubilee junketing.
