A REMARKABLE RESCUE
OVERBOARD OFF H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA. Australian Press Assn.—United Service (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) MONTREAL. August 13. The voyage of H.M.A.S. Australia from Portsmouth to Montreal was not without incident. One incident bore eloquent testimony to the presence ot mind of the complement and navigation qualities of the vessel. During heavy weather which was encountered, a petty officer was washed overboard. Tlio sea was too rough to launch a lifeboat) though one was immediately manned with volunteers. The ship was stopped and circled the helpless sailor. A Jacob’s ladder was lowered and she steered alongside the swimming man who was able to catch bold of the lower rung. A line was then thrown to him and be was brought aboard, little the worse for bis experience. Following the arrival of the Australia, the officers and crew were officially welcomed by Mayor lloude and piominent citizens. Later, Rear-Admiral Hyde returned the visit to the City Hall. On Sunday the officers and men took part in a church parade and later attended a baseball game.
