Tiik misfortune which has overtaken the Westland Racing Club in the loss of its two fine stands on the Hokitika racecourse, is being deplored very generally. The Club is n local institution which has done a great deal to maintain the prestige of the town in the very popular sport of racing. The Club laid itself out to equip its grounds with appointments in every way creditable to the place. There are few country racings clubs which could boast such a well-found racecourse as that at Hokitika. The public were well catered for and provided with ample cover and facilities to view the racing throughout. Tho main stand destroyed was a fine structure, and well laid out and provided every convenience. Tho Stewards stand was so constructed as to enable the administrative work of .no Club to be conducted most smoothily, and tile accommodation was such as to leave very little to lw> desired. Tt is not likely that the Club will be able to repace the stands with anything equal to the former buildings, but doubtless the best will be done with the means available for all concerned. The local racecourse with its splendid appointments has l>een something of an asset and certainly in the world of sport it has stood the district in good stead.
