In the coming week-end the Westland Competitions will commence a series of what should prove interesting sessions. The Competitions made such a reputation in the past, that by their record they will commend themselves this year to liberal public patronage. The intimation that the entries total over 300. indicates good general support, and the competitors are to bo congratulated on their sustained interest and enthusiasm. They will ho reaping a. personal advantage, by their experience, but withal deserve all public encouragement. These are times when pleasure going is well patronised, and it is not easy always to find time for attention to educational pursuits “after hours.” But competitions appear to l>e rather a pleasant vehicle, and in most centres where the gatherings are hold, they enjoy very satisfactory support. The town has been well reputed for its natural talent, and there have been many personal triumphs by our young people when they have had opportunities to excel. Doubtless the coming festival will reveal native talent of a pleasing order, and with the range of subjects and entertainmen to he provided, patrons should enjoy the Competitions to the full. Certainly all concerned deserve every encouragement in their selfimposed task organised for the public benefit.
