A DIVORCE CASE,
AUCKLAND, Aug. 6
When Edith Emily Gollin.s petitioned for a divorce from Frederick Trevor Collins on the ground of desertion, Counsel said respondent was an habitual criminal and bad married her in -May 1925 without disclosing the fact. They had spent six days of the honeymoon in an hotel, Collins depriving his wife of £4OO and attempting a getaway to Australia. He was arrested at Wellington for a breach of probation and had been there ever since. Petitioner stated that on the strength of false telegrams she had given Collins £4OO to invest.
Rev. Jasper Caklcr gave evidence that he knew respondent under six different names. Judge Reed adjourned the case to allow present evidence to he .supplemented by affidavit evidence from Wellington, stating the fact that the man was in gaol did not prove desertion. A MANAWATU SUGGESTION. Palmerston n„ Aug. 5. A somewhat novel suggestion of the State running lotteries to relieve the burden of hospital and charitable aid taxation was discussed at a meeting of the Manawatu Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday, ft was decided to recommend the Dominion executive to take the matter up. George Perry, a single man and a Wnipukurau drover, pleaded guilty, before the justices to-day to sheep stealing charges, viz., 30 sheep from James W’m. MeDufF, farmer, of Wnipukurau, 100 sheep from Harry Singleton Hooper, the owner of Arlington Station ; and 35 sheep from Charles Twist, a Alarnkeko settler, of a total value of £282. He was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court at Napier. TIPSY MOTORIST. AUCKLAND. August 0. Benjamin Dooley, aged 47, was fined £25 on pleading guilty to being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car. Ife collided with a safety zone at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon, injuring his face. He was fined £5 on a similar charge in 1923. EN-JOCKEY’S CASE. AUCKLAND. August (5.
Said to have been at one time one of the best-known jockeys in New Zealand. Benjamin Deeley, aged 47, married, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to a charge of having been found in a state of intoxication while in control of a motor-car in Broadway. Newmarket, on Saturday evening. In asking for leniency on accused’s behalf, counsel said Deeley collided with a safety zone in Newmarket about six o’clock in the evening. Once he had enjoyed a degree of prosperity, and was one of the host known riders in the Dominion, but then lie had tallen on less fortunate days. However, lie had made a very remarkable recovery, and his recent plight was regrettable. Counsel urged that accused ho fined and not imprisoned. “It is difficult to know what to do with him,” said Mr Cutten, S.M. “T do not want to send him to gaol, because his wife and children will have to suffer, and T do not want to fine him heavily, because it will bo borne by bis wife and family too.” Counsel: “ fie can pay a reasonable fine, sir.” Deeley was convicted and fined £25, and was allowed 24 hours in which to pay.
