EMPIRE GAMES PROPOSAL

(Received this day at 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, August 6.

An important development aiming at inaugurating periodical Empire games to he held in Britain by different Dominions, lias resulted from a meeting of managers and officials of British teams. The meeting lasted five hours and was characterised by the strongest criticism of the arrangements and control ol the present Olympiad. The Canadian representatives particularly instanced the interpretation of some rules, which arc entirely opposed to British ideals. They also complain that favoured nations, including the United States, breaking the rules were only cautioned, whereas Canadians were disqualified. The arena was filled with officials of the more favoured nations and Dutch Olympiad officials. The New Zealand manager (Mr Ames) pointed out the necessity for allowing Dominion Olympic competitors a higher scale of expenses, enabling bigger teams to be sent. The speakers also complained that Amsterdam games were too much commercialised by the Dutch Committee. As the meeting proceeded it was clear that opinion was crystallising in favour of holding Empire games every four years, starting in 1930; also t.iat if Empire games conflicted with Olympiads it might be advisable to withdraw from Olympiads. It was even suggested that an Empire team would be the best method of entering for Olympiads. The meeting eventually appointed Barclay (British Athletic Amateur official), Duff, Daig, Ames and Robinson (Canadian) to draw up an agenda ami convene a meeting in London on 14tti August to discuss and inaugurate machinery to carry out the ideal o Empire games. The meeting mil con sist of Dominion managers and representatives of British athletic, swimming, rowing, cycling, boxing ani wrestling organisations.
