The weather on Saturday afternoon was all against good football. There were very heavy showers and it was bitterly cold. As a result the attend-, ance oil Cass .Square suffered considerably while the play generally was of a poor nature. EXCELSIORS V. KIWIS. This'senior game resulted in a, win for Excelsiors by 6 points (tries ( by; Bannister and Christenson) to 3 points (a penalty goal .by Tainui). On the play the winners had much the, best of the game and their score should have been larger. Mr Cutbush was referee. OTHER GAMES. The School third grade team defeated the Excelsior thirds by 0 points, (threo penalty goals by Stapleton) to G points, (a. try and a penalty goal). Auckland beat Canterbury at Rugby to-day in a game which' was disappointing. The handling of both sides was weak, and many opportunities to score were missed. Auckland scored 12 points (four tries) to Canterbury’s 10 points (two tries and a potted goal.) The scorers were: For Auckland, Fnlwnsser, Cox, R. DEFEATS ENGLAND IN FIRST TEST. AUCKLAND, Aug. 4. The first Rugby League test match between England and New Zealand wa.s played before an attendance of 27,000 spectators, and' resulted in a win for New Zealand by 17 13. Good weather conditions prevailed, and the ground was in good order. The New Zealand team, made a. magnificent defence, their tackling often frustrating likely scoring movements by the visitors.

England was penalised frequently in tlie early stages for serum breaches. In the first spell Dufty and Delgrosso kicked penalty goals for New Zealand, whole List scored a try which Delgrosso converted, making New Zealand’s score nine against England’s three. In the second spell, L. Scott scored two unconverted tries for New Zealand, and Delgrosso kicked a penalty goal. New. Zealand then led by 17—3. England made a great rally towards the. close of the game, both Fairc.lough and Oliver scoring tries under the goal posts, and Sullivan converting both of them. The game then ended: New Zealand 17, England 13.

REFEREE ON THE VISITORS. AUCKLAND, Aug. 5,

At complimentary dinner to the English League footballers, the English captain, in proposing the toast of “The Referee,” indicated he did not agree with many of the rulings of that official.

The referee, Air Bull, replying to the toast, said that the Englishmen did not play the game, and lie considered that they were “a lot of squealers.”

The gate takings at yesterday’s League Test match totalled £2,000.
