PAPER-MAKING. NEW ZEALAND WOODS SUITABLE. Australian Press Assn.—United Service NEW YORK, August 1. A message from Madison, Wisconsin, states that experiments on behalf of the New Zealand Government have been concluded at the United States Forest Product Laboratory, in which it has been discovered that New Zealand hardwoods are capable of producing a quality of newsprint comparable with tbe American standard.
The Department of Agriculture, in which the Forestry Department is included, luts issued n statement in Washington, expressing the conviction that “ New Zealand is now unquestionably able to hold its own in any price-cutting competition which might arise.” Particular gratification is expressed' 1 in Washington that the Forestry Department, which undertook the experiments, made the proviso that the United States would be able to benefit in the event of tlie test being successful and would be enabled to utilise United States hardwoods for newsprint, a capacity in which hitherto this class of 'timber lias not been available. Tlie Forestry Department declared: “The production of newsprint from hardwoods is profoundly significant to the United States.” CHILD MURDERER-. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 2. The California Appeal Court has denied the second appeal, of Hickman for a rehearing. The defendant’s attorneys promise to carry the case to the United States Supreme Court. If unsuccessful, Hickman may pay the penalty before Christmas.
