On the' motion of South Africa to accord the amateur status, Australia, New Zealand and England supported. America suggested the International Federation adopt the- American ruling allowing paid life-savers to compete as amateurs provided they uncompeted during their term of office or within thirty days thereafter. Duff strongly supporting the motion pointed out that life-savers swimming in the surf gained no advantage for Stillwater competition. The proposal was rejected by a large majority, Continental and Canadian delegates Opposing, on the ground! that the principle was open to abuse ns clubs might thus obtain the paid services of the best swimmers under the cloak of life-saving. Chamberlain is suffering from broncho pneumonia. MYSTERIOUS EPIDEMIC. (Received this day at 9 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 3. Following a recent mysterious epidemic in the ranks of the Metropolitan Police which is still unsolved and resulted in one death, an extraordinary outbreak occurred among Army officers stationed at Chatham. Fifteen, including Captain C. J. Martin, a Victoria Grosser also three D.S.O.’s were hospitalled after attending a dance suffering from acute throat trouble akin to tonsalitis. Six women guests were similarly affected ‘simultaneously.
A mild epidemic, variously described as enteric fever and paratyphoid is reported in several disricts in Lon. don area. The three outbreaks have certain features in common. The tood supplies are being analysed. H.M.S. DIOMEDE. LONDON, August 3. The New Zoaland cruiser Diomede, which has been paid off was partly recommissioned on 19th July. She is at present refitting, pending receipt of the remainder of her complement. She leaves Portsmouth for New Zealand, via Panama on 4th September, arriving in the middle of November. Repairs to tlie submarines Otway and Oxley at Malta dockyard should be completed by Sept.’Bth. They are expected to he seaworthy early in November.
