PACKING OF VEGETABLES. WELLINGTON, August 3. A deptuation of Hutt Valley Producers’ Association interviewed Mr O. J. Hawken to-day, requesting that before any stringent regulations to cope with false packing of vegetables were introduced, they .should be consulted. While quite unsympathetic, regarding false packing, the deputation sought to impress on the Minister that there were two sides to the question, and it did not matter if big vegetables were on top so long as the article sold was a fair sample. A case was quoted of lettuce being sold in the market at twopence and retailed at sixpence. Mr Hawken said tbe system of standardisation would have to be taken into consideration. He referred to what standardisation had done for the export industry in butter, etc. and predicted a similar result in regard to the local marketing of garden produce. THEFT OF BUTTER. WELLINGTON, August 3. Arthur Hobbs, carrier, aged 27, was sentenced this morning for theft of 500 boxes of butter valued at £SOO, from Joseph Nathan and Company.’ It was stated that Hobbs had absconded from bail. The Judge said that the result of prisoner’s action was unfortunate. His surety had to forfeit £IOO but counsel said that he would he reimbursed. His Honour said the prisoner was a first offender but it was not a case in which the benefits of the First Offenders’ Act should be extended to him. He would be sentenced to two years’ hard. SENTENCE FOR TH EFT. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. Magistrate Page to-day sentenced a letter sorter, 'Daniel Darwin Coyle, to two months eacli oil two charges of stealing letters containing in all £4 ss, to be concurrent. THE DISABLED WAITUNA. He was fined £7 and costa, the bench holding the speed was excessive when, a woman was severely injured.

DAYLIGHT SAVING. " WELLINGTON, August 3

The altitude of the Labour Department- in reference to the proposal to introduce daylight saving in various parts of the Dominion was announced by Mr Waite, officer in charge of Wellington District Labour Office. The Department is willing to assist any such schemes as proposed by regarding the arrangements that might he agreed upon between tbe parties as a compliance with the various awards.
