The planets Mercury and Venus are too close to the sun during the greater part of the month to be seen, hut towards the end of August both may he visible in the western shy. M.irs rises <:n August Ist at 2.4 a.m., and on August 15th at 1.54 a.m. ; Jupiter rises on these dates at 0.42 a.m., and 11.52 p.m. respectively, and Saturn sets on these dates at 3.30 a.m., and 2.34 a.m. respectively.

There will he an occultation of tiie planet .Mars by the moon on August 10th, the earth, moon and planet being in a line at 5.42 a.m. ; the phenomenon will be visible in New Zealand as a close graze.
