(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.') THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.in. Leave of absence for the remainder of the session was granted Hon. Gow on account of his departure for Canada with the Empire Parliamentary Delegation. Hon. Thompson gave notice to introduce the Education Amendment Bill. The Imprest Supply Bill No. 2 was received from the House and put through all stages and passed without discussion. Captive Birds Shooting Prohibition Bill was introduced on the motion of Hon. Thompson and read the first time. It is on the same lines as the Bill previously introduced by the same Councillor. THE HOUSE. The House met at 2.30 p.m. The following Bills were introduced and read the first time. Engineers Registration Amendment Bill. Licensing Amendment Bill. The Licensing Amendment Bill which was introduced by Afr .Mason (Eden) has reference to sale of New Zealand mines, and the Education Amendment Bill (Afr H. E. Holland) is an endeavour to restrict the power of the Government to promote regulations by an order in Council. Replying to a dismission on the Cook Islands report, Sir Maui Pomare said the new island steamer “Maui Pomare” was proving mast satisfactory, but so soon as private enterprise was prepared to resume the island trade on tlie proper lines, the Government would retire from it. BT.BLE-IN-SCH OOLS DEFEATED. At the evening sitting Mr Holland (Christchurch North) moved the second reading of the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill and after a debate lasting till 1.15 a.m. tflie second reading was defeated liv 31 to 28. The House rose at 1.20 a.m. till 2.30 p..ni.
