SUMMER TIME

MR SIDEY’S SUGGESTION. WELLINGTON, July 31. The possibilities of summer-time being adopted in the cities and towns were discussed hy Mr T. K. Sidey in the House to-night. Mr Sidey said that lie noticed that one or two local bodies had been considering the possibility of adopting a system 6f sum-mer-time, and thus giving the people !in their locality the great benefits which were enjoyed last year. He thought it would be rather a difficult mutter to introduce such a system in view of many of the considerations involved. There were such things as the Arbitration Court awards and Acts of Parliament which fixed the time at which people should start and cease work. It was possible, however, that an amendment of the Municipal Corporations Act would meet many of the difficulties, provided a majority of the municipalities could agree as to the advisability of adopting such a proposal. There would still be a difficulty that the time in the boroughs and in tho country would differ, but the matter was one that was well worth considering, and he commended it to tho Minister. Personally he intended to go very closely into the question. WELLINGTON, July 31. Councillor Mitchell has given notice of his intention to move at the next meeting of the City Council: “ That Wellington city and district should consider a daylight saving scheme of its own. First: That the Mayor convene a meeting of the citizens to devise a scheme throughout the city and its environs, and that representatives of all the public bodies and associations within thirty miles of Wellington he especially invited to attend, with a view of extending the scheme into these areas. Second : That the Town Clerk he instructed to take steps to apply this scheme to all the functions and operations of the City Council.
