A HUSBAND’S THREATS. PALMERSTON N., Aug. 1. The trial commenced at the Supreme Court this morning of Norman Ernest Stanley, whose occupation was given as a steward, on a charge of having sent J. R. limes, solicitor, a letter containing a threat to kill accused’s wife. In evidence limes said that on Decomtier sth. last he received a letter from accused .sent from New York, in which a threat was made by accused to kill his wife and exterminate his family. Witness handed the letter tc the police. A postal official produced an offensively addressed letter from accused to his wife. This had been opened by the Department, to find a threat to kill her, and approximately sixteen offensively addressed letters from accused were intercepted and sent back to their country of origin. The wife of accused evidenced that the latter left her the day following their marriage to go to his farm, which did not exist and subsequently she received threatening letters from all over the world. A detective gave evidence that accused in a statement, said the letter was written in a foolish, despondent mood brought on by deep affection for the wife who had repelled all attempts to make things up between them. The threats were not seriously meant. He had returned with the express intention of apologising. The case is proceeding.
