BURIED 490 YEARS. LONDON, June 1

Princess Mary Viscountess Lascelles yesterday opened part of the Priory Church of St. Bnrtholomew-the-Grcat. Smitlifield, E. C.—London’s oldest church—which had been bidden under 7ft of earth and old buildings tor 400 years. It formed the east walk of the cloister attached to the church, which was for ml ed in 1123, and was until 1922 covered by stables. The ground under which the north walk of the cloister is buried has yet to be bought and excavated. Princess Mary was shown many interesting “finds" made during the excavation, including the original Norman baptismal font, which has bocn set up in the east walk, and a metal poor-box mounted on an oak pedestal used in the church in the 17tli century.
