COCHET’S BRILLIANCY. Australian Press Assn.—United Service PARIS, July 27. In the singles second round, Cocbet (Franco) beat Hennessey (U.S.A.) 5—7 „_7, 6—3, 6-0. The match was a magnificent one, both hitting out in preference to playing for safety. Thereafter Coclict asserted his superiority. The Oochet-Hennessey match was one between genius and talent. It was a question whether the Frenchman would wake up long and often enough to gather in an expected victory. Cochet, as usual, did not open well. He gave the American victory by his own mistakes in the first set. In the second set the Frenchmen at intervals, showed lightning work, punctuated by feeble patches. Thereafter, being thoroughly aroused, Cochet was seen at his best, and just romped home in the last set, which was one of the most astonishing ever seen in international tennis. It only lasted ten minutes, as Hennessey won only one game.
To-morrow the doubles match will l>e Borotra and Brugnon against Hennessy and Lott.
TILDEN’S WONDERFUL WIN PARIS, July 27
In the Davis Cup tennis contests, an enthusiastic, perspiring crowd of nine thousand people watched Tilden heat Lacoste after a five-set battle, lasting one hundred and forty minutes, under a fierce sun. The conditions were not improved by a high wind and much dust, necessitating the watering of the court after the third set. Though the bettor man won, until the last set, whon Tilden went 5—3 there was nothing in it.
Tho Daily Express’ special correspondent says: This match provided tho most amazing victory in Til den’s career. Lacoste, however, deserved equal praise, because he played just as well as the victor. Lacoste actually won 23 games and 153 points ns against Tilden’s 21 games and 118 points. The crowd gave Tilden a wonderful ovation when he took the court. Tilden never ,before employed his versatility more cunningly and effectively. He reacted to the occasion. Hi,s chops and slices carried more spin than ever. One .marvelled at the skill with which ho drop-shotted, at the .ferocity of his driving, and the power of his services.

PARIS, July 29,
In tlie Davis Cup doubles Cochet and Borotra beat Tilden and Hunter 6—4, 6—B, 7—5, 4—6, 6—2. PARIS, July 30.
The Frenchmen achieved a spectacular victory. Tilden was just as remarkable as on Friday and Hunter ably seconded him. The French won many points in tlie first set by lightning smashes. Both men drove hard and placed the hall finely. The third set was slower, the Frenchmen apparently less inspired, but they scrambled out winners. Hunter was steadier than heretoore.
The first four games of the last set wero won by Prance’s superb team work. The Americans were also good in the fifth, Borotra deliberately drove out the ball following a disputed serve from Cochet. The succeeding game was a magnificent example of French control in returning a series of temptingly high shots. Tho visitors received a terrific ovation.
