SUMMER TIME.

REASONS FOR DEFEAT. WELLINGTON, July 2G. “So. many people have experienced the benefits of daylight saving that it is difficult to believe that wo have heard the last of Summer Time in New Zealand,” said Mr T. Iv. Sidey today, when speaking of the defeat of his Bill in the House of Representatives last night. Discussing the change of votes, Air Sidey 6aid that eight votes were not recorded which appeared in last year’s list, only two of these lieing opponents, while Mr \v. ,1. Jordan (Manakau), who was alisent on account of his impending departure with the Canadian delegation, was refused a pair by the opponents of the Bill. He attributed the defeat not so much to the actual change in memlbers’ opinions, as to the feeling that their constituents were against the Bill, and especially to the imminence of the general election. “A good deal of pressure,” said Air Sidey, “was brought to bear by supporters of the Bill at' tlie last moment, but for a long time the opponents were more active.” Air Sidey suggested that pressure was likely to lie brought to bear on the Government to put the daylight saving issue to the elec tons by referendum, although there was sure to l>e strong opposition to this course from the country districts. Air Sidev has taken his defeat in good spirit. “So far as I am personally concerned,” ho said, “I will always have the satisfaction of having secured my objective of many years by getting a trial for daylight saving, and that was a great thing for any private memlier to achieve. I have never anticipated getting further than that stage, feeling that the responsibility for further enactment should rest with the Government.” THE DIVISION LIST. In the division list sent down the following were omitted from the ayes list—F. J. Rolleston, Savage and Seddon. Tlie pairs were—For the Bill, Stewart, Milford, Tapley, Horn, Ngata.
