William Thomas, harbourmaster at Kara uvea, appeared in the Westport Magistrate’s Court before Mr W. Melflcurn, S.M., charged with the theft of £32 8s 7d. It was stated in evidence that drink was his trouble. He was admitted to probation.
It is notified in this issue on holm’ of the Westland County Council, that rebate .in rates cannot bo .granted after Thursday of next week (August 2nd). Ratepayers paying on or before that date are entitled to an allowance of five per cent, on the sum payable. The Council has received already a considerable quota of the annual rate.
The need for tho improvement of the mail services to portion of South AVestland is being taken up by the AVcstland Progress League. It is intended to agitate for a thrico-weokly service to AVaiho, and a twice weekly service to AVeheka. Both arc now liecoming outstanding tourist centres, and will carry largo populations, so that increased mail facilities are. well duo.

For some time past there have been complaints of the' breaking of a number of telephone insulators, and wo ■understand as the result of police investigations that charges , have been laid against a number of young lads, who will come before the Magistrate in about a fortnight’s time.
At the annual meeting of the Alexander Mines. Ltd., Messrs James McKay (Greymouth) and Sydney Fry (Brunnerton) were elected to tho two vacancies on tho Board of Directors. Messrs W B. (A.tild and 11. S. Castle were re-elected auditors. Satisfaction was expressed at the improved prospects of tho mine. In No. 4 level north a very promising reef track is being followed, which is showing a little stone carrying values. This is a hopeful indication, and may lead on to tho solid reef being intersected.
Yesterday at Wellington, Mr Seddon, M.P. introduced a Westland deputation to Hon McLeod, Minister of Lands, relative to. the sub-division of the Education Reserve, near Hariliari. The representatives of the West Coast Farmers’ Union present were Messrs McKay, Muleare- and McClery. As an outcome of the deputation, Mr J. B. Thomson, the Under-secretary for Lands, is to visit the locality and report. In tho House yesterday Mr Soddon also presented a petition signed by 88 settlers praying for the subdivision of the Education Reserve referred to.
There was a good attendance of ladies at Sb. Andrew’s Hall, yesterday in connection with the afternoon organised to stimulate interest in the local branch of the Plunket Society. Some names were enjoyed and a short entertainment programmo was given, when items were contributed by Mieses Stapleton and Davidson, and Mesdames Harrison and Wright. Several new members were enrolled, and a meeting will be held shortly to elect officers. During the proceedings afternoon tea was served and a general discussion in the interests of the Society took place.
